Pattaya —
Chonburi police raided a building in Pattaya on Friday, May 3rd, and arrested 45 illegal Burmese workers.
The operation was conducted following a tip-off from concerned citizens. They complained that there were several migrant workers residing at the premises.
Upon receiving the information, Pol. Lt. Col. Weerachai Thinkamoot, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Police for Chonburi province, led a team of police officers to inspect the suspected location at Soi Thepprasit 17, Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province.
There, officers discovered a total of 107 rooms occupied by both Thai nationals and migrant workers. During the search, some individuals attempted to flee, but police still managed to arrest 45 individuals (13 women and 32 men). All apprehended individuals were subsequently brought to the Chonburi Immigration Office in Pattaya for further legal action.
Immigration officials conducted checks of the individuals’ passports and work visas. They then learned that eight individuals had overstayed their visas, while 15 had entered Thailand illegally without proper documentation.
Mr. Ittipat (surname withheld), the owner of the building, later arrived at the immigration office. He claimed that he did not know these migrant workers entered Thailand illegally. He also stated that he was unaware that renting accommodations to migrant workers without informing the immigration authorities was illegal.
Mr. Kriangsaak (surname withheld), Mr. Ittipat’s son, explained that he was responsible for overseeing the building. He charged the occupants 2,500-2,800 baht per month with a deposit of 2,800 baht. He also admitted to being unaware of the legal requirements regarding renting accommodations to migrant workers.
Pol. Lt. Col. Weerachai educated Mr. Ittipat and Mr. Kriangsaak on the legal requirements associated with renting accommodations to migrant workers. He then informed the arrested workers of their charges.
The workers are expected to be deported back to their home country.
