Pattaya —
The mayor of Pattaya is speeding up a flood prevention project that aims to divert floodwaters from the city to local canals to prevent persistent flooding, with full completion expected in 150 days.
Mr. Poramase Ngampiches, Mayor of Pattaya, recently announced that solving flooding is a top priority for his administration, along with promoting sustainable tourism. Since taking office, he has continued the work of former mayor Mr. Sonthaya Khunpluem, which focuses on a major project to install a water diversion system. This system will move large amounts of water from the eastern area to natural canals, helping to prevent flooding in Pattaya.
The mayor explained that the installation of a 2-meter drainage pipe, which stretches over 6 kilometers from the entrance of Soi Khao Noi to Naklua Canal, is already complete. However, work was delayed for over six months due to a high-voltage power line obstructing the drainage pipe. Now that the city has found a solution to this issue, contractors will start working immediately, with plans to complete the project within 150 days.
Once the system is operational, Mr. Poramase expected that it will redirect millions of cubic meters of floodwaters to greatly reduce risks of flooding in Pattaya. The project costs over 2 billion baht. If successful, the city plans to make another investment to extend the system south toward Huai Yai Canal for better flood management.
Mr. Poramase also noted that the number of flood-prone areas in Pattaya has decreased from over 15 to just a few spots, like South Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road and the Khao Talo railway area. Even in these areas, he said the problems have improved, as floodwaters now recede much quicker.
The mayor said if rainfall stays under 80 mm, there will very likely be no flooding. However, if it exceeds 100 mm overnight, some flooding may still happen. The mayor concluded that the city has set up a special task force to manage these situations in preparation for rains in the future.
